The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne is offering several postdoctoral fellowships in economic sociology and political economy for applicants from Central and Eastern Europe. The fellowships will start in October 2008 and will be awarded for one year. The program is open to researchers from a variety of social science disciplines, in particular but not exclusively sociology and political science. The deadline for applications is January 31, 2008. Fellowships are for up to twelve months, normally beginning on October 1.

Applicants must have good command of spoken and written German or English. During their tenure fellows are expected to be resident in Cologne and participate in the intellectual life of the institute.

Applicants should have received their M.A. or doctoral degree at a Central or East European university. The PhD should have been completed no longer than three years before taking up the fellowship. Awards will be made on the basis of scholarly excellence and a research proposal outlining the project to be pursued at the MPIfG. Research projects should relate to the substantive concerns of the institutes research program and should deal with the politics, societies and markets of Eastern Europe, preferably in comparison with other countries.

At current rates, fellows will receive a stipend of 1,750 euros per month plus a small family allowance if applicable. The MPIfG pays for one round of travel to and from Cologne. It will help with finding housing in Cologne if arrangements are made in time.

The deadline for application is January 31, 2008. Awards will be made and applicants notified in April 2008. The fellowship starts in the fall of 2008.

Applicants should also indicate how much time they would want to spend at the MPIfG and when they would like to start their tenure. They may apply in German or English either by e-mail or post.
